The Met has strict guidelines on materials they allow. Please follow their guidance.

Pencils

The Met Museum allows only pencil sketching – no charcoal, ink or markers.   Derwent Graphic, Cretacolor, Stadtler, and Faber Castell are excellent pencil brands.

  • Pencils graded 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B (these are soft graphite and give dark lines)
  • Pencils graded 2H and 4H (these are harder graphite and give silvery lines)
  • Gray kneaded eraser
  • White plastic eraser or a gum eraser
  • Pencil sharpener with case for shavings or bring a baggie
  • 2 blending stumps and/or a chamois cloth (optional)

Paper
  • A pad of drawing paper, approximately 11 x 14. Strathmore is a good brand. Hot-press watercolor paper is better paper but quite expensive. Arches or TH Saunders are good brands.
  • A clipboard in the same size as drawing pad is not required, but is recommended.

Suggested
  • Small, light-weight folding “camp” stool. Art stores or sporting goods stores carry (as does Amazon). The Met gurads will not allow larger beach chairs or similar. You can wait to purchase until after first class.

Miscellaneous
  • Artist’s tape or equivalent
  • Four large binder clips
  • Small notebook or small sketchbook
  • Dedicated bag for easy transport of materials to/from museum
