Ekphrasis

This portrait is a work of great intensity, in which the psychology and physiology of the subject are represented in perfect unison with the execution.

John Varriano has masterfully created this painting using a technique of wet into wet paint, which is applied thickly so that every mark stands out in bold relief. Upon closer observation, we may see that the slashing and swirling action of the brush serve as a metaphysical representation of the model’s expression.

The lighting is intense, forming patterns of powerful contrasts of illumination and shadow. The colors used are pure and vibrant and lend a candid frankness to the work.

The model is dressed in black lace wearing a string of white pearls. In the process of lighting a cigarette, she has momentarily raised her gaze to confront the viewer. One of her eyes is in shadow, partially covered by a lock of hair, but her illuminated eye carries the entire feeling of the work. Her beauty does not conceal the fact that she is a strong, intelligent woman who will not tolerate weakness, stupidity, or lies, because she will see right through them.

In creating this work, Varriano has perhaps inadvertently challenged the viewer, to be honest with themselves while looking at his art.
