The Homeless Philosopher
2013
Varriano believes that the homeless are members of our society like everyone else. He has found that if you show them a little compassion and some generosity, they will on occasion open up and engage in conversation.
There is a multitude of causes that can lead to homelessness, including mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, financial ruin, or a nervous breakdown. Varriano knows enough about life and history, to realize that many talented and sensitive people, artists included, could wind up homeless.
Understanding their plight, Varriano has made several drawing studies and paintings related to the subject of the homeless.
The fellow depicted here has a knowing expression with a subtle smile and an insightful point of view regarding many aspects of life.
Varriano refers to him as the philosopher, and this painting is one of a group of the artist’s works known as his “Ghosts."
