For many years John’s former wife Sharon would model for him. He did several portraits and nudes of her, among which, this is a fine example.

The painting is rich and beautiful and executed in a style he developed that shows an extraordinary capacity for reconciling realism and expressionism. Many expressionistic artists tend to paint compelling figures, that are often grotesquely distorted. Academic paintings of the nude, although anatomically correct, and finely executed, can be bland and lifeless.

Varriano set out to create an art form that achieved something of the best of both worlds in this regard, and this painting aptly displays his success in this endeavor.

The anatomy of the figure is wonderfully depicted, maintaining what Varriano refers to as “The dignity of the human form”. The bold expression is achieved through the use of shimmering color and powerfully executed brushstrokes.

Perhaps most impressive, is the restful quality that the artist has achieved in this work. The figure is rendered very convincingly and we feel that the model is in deep sleep. She is comforted by a thick, white blanket that exudes the softness of a puffy, white cloud.

The balance of intense colors excites the senses, and yet, miraculously does not detract from the overall feeling of calm repose.

This is a true jewel of a painting.
